I've had no luck capturing the content I originally had in mind for this project, I wan't mainly commercials and some programing mapping out the day in the life of.., however apparently I don't watch enough tv or something because the programing I recorded didn't show half the stuff I remember. So what I've decided to do is to record television programs throughout the day, play them back on tv on FF and record the image directly from the tv with a camcorder, editing the content to 5 or 6 minutes then go to a sleep phase until the motion sensor is tripped again and the process starts over again. So essentially the concept is the same just modified slightly.

more family stuff
April 26, 2006So I have finished forming and welding the stands for the tv's being used in this project. The tv's have been taken out of their cases and I took some round stock and welded two 1/4" nuts on each end and ran a bolt through the tv mount that is strapped to the screen itself. Once those were in place I welded and formed more round stock to encase the screen an welded legs to it so the big tv sits about 2' off the ground. There are two other smaller tv's representing the kids, one of the tv's has the same type of casing as the larger but is slightly undeveloped (missing parts that the big one has) and sits about 10" off the ground, the last tv is representing the youngest of the kids and has a different stand than the others and sits about 6" off the ground.
I ran into some problems with the big tv, I had been using an old tv/vcr combo that I had stopped using because tapes kept getting stuck. Well when I put the stand all together the tv kept acting like a tape was stuck and kept shutting itself off. So I disconnected the cables connected to the tv, didn't work, then I took the entire vcr component off, didn't work either, finally I took the stop/eject button off, thinking maybe there was a short, nope that didn't work either so I had to go out and buy another tv, which when I got it back it was one inch to big for the casing I build, so I had some adjustments to do to make it fit.

current work on the family
April 24, 2006At the moment the video footage is being worked on, still waiting on some equipment to start the editing process, the final footage will be bits of commercials and television programing throughout the day. The content from tv will map out a day in the life of the family. The cycle will start with an alarm clock going off and the parental tv turns on and shows commercials for coffee and shower gels, breakfast stuff, the alarm goes off again, as if the parent is waking the kids, and their tv's turn on with similar content. The original idea had more interaction within the piece. for example, the two kids would begin to bicker back and forth with the volume rising and rising until the parents tv turns off and screams at the kids to shut them up, and then their tv's would both show some children's program, as if they were put in front of the tv as a form of punishment . The day cycle will go through the morning, afternoon, evening, and night, once into the sleep phase, lights shut off, tv's switch to blank screens or some other screen representing sleep. Once the piece reaches the sleep phase of the day cycle it will stay in that mode until some on walks up on the piece and triggers a motion sensor. Sorry no pics as of yet.
